As the miniature artist, Annie Graham, and her family prepare for her mother's funeral--the unbearably complex and cryptic septuagenarian, Ellen Leigh--unsettling occurrences and palpable spiritual manifestations start nestling in the secluded house's dark corners. Then--as a thick veil of grief, guilt, and a sinfully pleasant sense of relief shroud the already troubled mother--more and more, the mounting distress of Annie's thirteen-year-old daughter, Charlie, becomes evident, as her older brother, Peter, begins to feel the relentless anguish of culpability. Now, little by little, a sinister dark presence robs Annie of her free will, demanding a cruel sacrifice in exchange for glorious rewards. Will the Grahams ever shake off the macabre connection to the unseen realm, especially when evil seems to be hereditary?

While the camera work, the sound engineering and most notably some of the acting is top notch, this does not make a great movie. Story and pacing is a serious problem and while the build up is quite good, the pay off falls short. Halfway through it's runtime the movie goes in a very familliar and dare I say: tropy direction and sadly it doesn't redeem itself again.
Tony Collette has some very strong moments in the movie but she goes over the top - allmost cringeworthy so - in some other parts (you'll know it when you see it) so I don't think that Oscar is going to happen.
At some of it's best moments this movie has hints of and nods to classics like The Shining, The Exorsist and even Susperia but it lacks the hart, soul and most important the consistency of those great movies.

The characters as flat as pictures in a book. The acting was good for what they had to work with in the script, but this was so poorly made it was Almost painful to watch. The cover on the disc said "this generations the exorcist but heads will spin more savagely" NOT! The special effects looked 50 years old, but that is as close as they get to the Exorcist. If you want to see it, rent it from the local library, but I'd skip it if I were you. Wish I hadn't bought the 4K version now because it'll never be watched again.
